As something different, I want to hear from you guys. As a fairly specific community, there aren’t many of us; maybe a few hundred, and less are active contributors on the forums and the like. However, we all share our love for creating and playing Wolfenstein 3D and various mods. I love writing about the various games and topics in the community, but I would like to hear something from you guys. That’s where this post comes in.
I know everyone has an experience they can call the “best” and “worst” when it comes to Wolf3D. For something different, I’d like you guys to share with me and everyone who comes and reads this blog, your idea of the best and worse games in the community, as well as why. If you have a spare moment after reading this, drop a comment with your thoughts. Here’s mine:
For best game, I’m going to have to go with Orb Of Dilaaria. Although Lair Of The Mantis could very well become my favourite game when it does come out, right now that honour goes to Adam Biser’s mod. The game has so much in it that it’s one of the few games that without prior knowledge, a new player wouldn’t make the link that it’s just a modified version of Wolfenstein. I play it now and again, and I still haven’t finished it. The levels are so complex it takes ages to explore everything, and I know even once I have finished the game, I’ll have to go back, because of the addition of alternative pathways through the game to increase replay ability. Personally I don’t want to say too much because I’ll eventually want to dedicate a whole article to it, so I’ll have to leave it there. But it’s one of, if not the best Wolf3D game I’ve ever played.
Then we have the other side of the coin, the worst game I’ve ever played. That would have to be one of Kyo Kusanagi/Richter Belmont’s earlier releases, in the form of Resident Evil. While the games he brings out now aren’t as bad, back then, hearing his name attached to a mod spelled certain doom for the game. Resident Evil had stolen graphics, exact copies of maps, and ridiculous extras meant to be taken seriously, but just came off over the top (I think the guns had 600 ammunition or something, which was ridiculous for what was in the game). The game came off bland and uninteresting, and difficult to play without feelings your IQ drop. Once again, I’m going to write a proper post about this in the near future, so I don’t want to go into it too much, but it is by far, the worst Wolfenstein mod I’ve ever played. As a note, no offence is meant to Richter or anything, I just really don’t like this game.
So as I said earlier, this post is about YOU. I’d like to hear you’re opinions of what the best and worst games in the community are, and why.
Orb was great, lots of features that totally took me by surprise when playing, and the multiple paths added a lot of replayability as well. Those underwater parts were sexy as hell too
My favorites are always kind of changing, but I’ve always really liked mods that use new gfx, those seem more memorable to me than others, and Ringman’s mods “Drawn and Quartered” and “Mutant blobs from Uranus” where probably my favorite. Havoc’s “Absence” was great, had some cool features and kept me hooked. WSJ’s and Majik’s mods I always enjoyed playing as well.
There are plenty more I’ve loved but off the top of my head i’m drawing blanks right now, lol.
As for the bad, I was going to say “the best mod in the world” by Ueberwolf but it actually cracked me up a lot now that I think of it, so I just can’t hate it. Yeah I know I’m taking the cowards way out and not picking a most hated, sue me
as for my favorite mod, I’d have to say the golden episodes. it took new graphics and it took graphics from the lost epiosdes and made the mod more like what the lost episodes should have been. it was one of those mods where even though its really hard the atmosphere of the whole mod is great. as for the worst, I’d have to say some mod I think called the best mod in the world. I know its probably a joke mod, but its so horrible that I deleted it after playing 1 level.
For me, and I’m sure a lot of people are going to say that’s it’s typical, but my favorite mod is End of Destiny. The features in it were outstanding and I’ve never played through a mod with such intent before. For me the standard levels were fantastic but the challenge and super secret levels where what sold me. Being able to play a Wolf mod while actually having to use my brain on the best way to do things was outstanding. Honorable mention here goes to WLHack’s ‘False Spear’. Although there are a few glitches in it and some things that could have been fixed up a little better, the gameplay was challenging and the graphics and everything about it was really to my liking in a mod.
The worst I have ever played was one of Kyo Kusangai’s mods as well. I think it was Lost World 3 or maybe 4. The very first guards you came across were frozen, the graphics were all stolen, which is something a lot of people are guilkty of but what I really hated about it was the fact that the levels had been stolen without permission from the original creator. It had the same texture on walls, floor and ceiling’s in some places, which looked awful, and things were mismatched and thrown in all together all over the place. Unfortunately it’s given me a real hesitation to play any of Richter’s newer releases.
Hm … the best Wolf3D mod ever. Tough call! Probably Halls Of Stonehenge 1, though; its levels and gameplay were solid, and everything was well-balanced. Absence, medEvil, and Trench Warfare make a close second for my vote.
As for the worst Wolf3D mod, that’s pretty easy for me. Anyone remember “D.O.I. (Destroyers Of Ignas)”? Dull layouts, the same tune repeating in the menu, game, and everything else, and then you can’t even understand what the bad guys say when you kill ‘em. And the Ignas were downright obnoxious for me.
I say Orb, End of Destiny, False Spear and Absence are the Best Mods i ever played cause it doesn’t feel like playing wolfenstein but a whole other game together.
I dunno what are the worest i’ve ever played.
ooh i just want to bring this up. Resident Evil. My god….I was 10 or 12 since i made that mod. I was soo new into modding that I dunno what I was doing. and the freezing gurad thing…That’s Part 5 Dean. But my mod have gotten better since Lost World Part 1. I’ve learned my last lesson, But that is the past this is now.
For a long time I’ve thought that the best games I’ve ever played have been “Totengraeber” and “Schabbs 2000″ – and I can never forget those babies. “Spear Resurrection” and “End of Destiny” is a whole other world for me in the Wolfing biz. I love them both though and cannot help but cite those as the essential and best mods ever. Personally I don’t think I’ve gotten into any other mods after EoD, but I’ll also cite “Chokage” and “Coming of the Storm” as my favourites… Not to mention “Project Weltuntergang” and the obscure “Dark Dungeon” which was the first mod I ever played.
The worst games… Well, I’d probably also mention Kyo Kusanagi’s oldest efforts. But who am I to criticize… With some exceptions, I think everybody’s first, second efforts are substandard. I myself released oodles of games before realizing that essential stuff, such as map design, an “original” idea and a brain was needed.
But seriously, knock-offs such as Sandy’s revamps of classic WSJ-games, “Schabbs 3000″ and any game that use “Creator”-maps… Those are the worst games. In my opinion.
