Final Fight

Final Fight

So a sequel to Final Fight is coming out? In anticipation, I decide to give the first episode of the original game a whirl.

I’ve learned my lesson from previous games (Namely Absense) and actually read the manual this time to make sure I don’t miss anything plot or feature wise.
The first thing I am going to pick at is the plot. Apparently the Americans, after sending in agent after agent after agent into Germany, finally call for BJ to help. It brings up the question that if the government sends in a spy, who they mysteriously lose contact with, wouldn’t they instantly be alerted? But no, they only became alerted after sacrificing several, several Americans, because one spy managed to spell it out for them, before disappearing himself.
FYI, I didn’t read past page 17 of the story; I wanted to get playing already, so i skipped straight to the actual guide and read that instead. The story is way too long.

So getting into it, it feels real different to be playing a game with so many enemies. Every room is packed and the guards do alot of damage. One shot in the face at point blank range caused almost 50 damage. I found myself almost running out of ammo on more than one occasion, and contantly moving to try and not take too much damage.
I mean, within 10 seconds of starting the secret level, i fought 7 guards in a really small room. Surprising but easy; I was able to kill them all with a quick spray from the machine gun.

The graphics are borrowed from various sources, such as one of Wolf-Skevos Jones’ enemy packs. The mutant sprite is nice with the chaingun mounted arms, but no coding change was made to reflect the appearance; instead of shooting with chainguns, they still shoot single shots. That annoys me. That and the well full of blood. What the hell is THAT doing there?
The maps are fun and simple, and he keeps each one original. A certain amount of strategy is required as just running headfirst into a room will have you dead within seconds (I’ve died at least 10 times so far; I love saving). You never know what you’re going to get when you open a door.

I thoguht it was great the way action and strategy were balanced, yet ridiculous (in a good way). For a game with little code changes, I loved it. I’m hoping Final Fight 2 proves to be just as fun an experience when it is released.
